People love backyard privacy hedges because they are so much better looking than a fence and yet they do much the same job. The big drawback to hedges is that they take so long to grow and if you plant full grown plants in yourself, they take awhile to look right as a hedge. Given the choice, most people would pick a hedge over a fence but the time involved makes a fence so much more practical.
